In Mauritius, between 1834 and 1920, many laborers came from various parts of India to work in sugarcane fields. In spite of their hardships, they strived to preserved Hindu culture.

Just like Mahashivratri is celebrated nation-wide in India, it is also the national festival of Mauritius, which is one of the biggest celebrations. Mangal Mahadev statue and his temple is considered to be a13th Jyotirlinga. This is the only Jyotirlings outside of India. Here you will find 108 FT tall murti of Lord Balaji. Laborers from Maharashtra, India, constructed Vitthal temple in Mauritius in 1902, ISKON temple, Sai Baba Temple, numerous Telugu and Tamil temples, and various other spiritual parks.
